Covewater Paddle Surf is a certified Canadian Importer of Record and an expert in shipping stand up paddleboards and paddles to Canada.
We have relationships with experienced, reputable shipping companies and a Canadian customs brokerage – this team assures that your board will sail smoothly through customs as it crosses into the True North Country Strong and Free.
We’re stoked to be able to provide SUP boards and paddles to our brothers up north! We can source just about any SUP or paddle you need.
Here’s how it works:
- If you are interested in a board, we’ll give you an approximate, all-inclusive quote for shipping as well as Canadian duties and taxes.
- If you decide to order the board, we will run your card for the cost of the board (no US tax of course!) as well as 80% of the estimated costs for shipping, duties and taxes.
- We handle ALL the detailed customs paperwork, broker paperwork and shipping arrangements. You just kick back and wait for the board to arrive.
- Upon delivery of the board, you don’t have to complete any paperwork or pay any costs at all – just inspect your killer new paddle board for safe arrival.
- Once Covewater has been billed for actual costs for shipping, duties and taxes, we will send you a copy of those records, then run your card for any costs owed (remember we already billed you for 80% of anticipated shipping, duties and taxes).
You go paddle or surf!
Example of Costs:
Here’s an example of typical SUP shipping charges to Canada - this example is from a 10’6” SUP valued at $1,400 shipped to British Columbia:
| EXAMPLE OF COST OF SHIPPING, DUTIES & TAXES | ||
| Service | Cost (USD) | |
| a. | Board Packing, Boxing and Paperwork Preparation | $50 |
| b. | Shipping (freight) charges | $214 |
| c. | Shipping insurance | $90 |
| d. | Customs Broker's fee | $50 |
| e. | Canadian Duties | $119 |
| f. | Goods & Services Tax (GST) | $70 |
| SHIPPING, DUTIES & TAXES | $593 | |
| Notes | ||
| a. | This $50 offsets some of the cost of bubblewrap packaging the board, boxing and creation and submission of all the paperwork to the shipper, the customs broker and Canadian customs, including prepayment of your duties and taxes. This is a lot of work, but we're stoked to do it for you. | |
| b. | Shipping charges vary based on board size and destination of course, but this is pretty typical. Please note: Shippers charge an additional $42 dollars for residential deliveries - deliver to a business if possible to avoid that additional cost. | |
| c. | Shipping insurance is cheaper through a third party than through the frieght carrier. In addition, our third party insurer does not have a deductable, whereas freight carriers normally do. We insure at the full retail value of the board. It is a flat $90. | |
| d. | This is the flat fee the Customs Brokerage charges to handle the customs transactions per shipment. | |
| e. | Because SUPs are generally not made in a NAFTA country (US, Canada or Mexico), they are subject to duties. Duties can range from 0% to more than 20% however, SUPs are generally classified in one of two sporting goods categories that puts them in either a 7.5% to 9.5% duties rate. For duties estimation, we utilize a duties rate of 8.5%. | |
| f. | The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a flat 5% tax applicable to all items. | |
| A Provencial Sales Tax (PST) may be charged by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). This would not be a charge that would be included at the time of shipping - rather the CRA may send you a bill for any PST due after you have received your goods. If applicable, PST varies by provence you live in, however, PSTs range from 0% (Alberta) to 10% (Nova Scotia). |
Shipping internationally, even to Canada, is complex and involves lots of paperwork including Commercial Invoices, Certificates of Origins and Importer of Record certification. We’ve got all that covered. Give us a call if there is anything we can do for you.
